The Ratings
Our simple & honest checklist covers a restaurant’s key ingredients:
Ambiance, Service, and Food.
AMBIANCE
3.5/10
Timber Pizza’s DC location is not particularly known for its ambiance and setting. Located on a quieter street in the Petworth neighborhood, Timber Pizza is more akin to a hole in the wall venue. In fact, the restaurant feels more like a food delivery churning machine… with stacks upon stacks of pizza boxes waiting for delivery drivers to come pick them up in order to satisfy the endless demand. Equipped with a few tables indoors and some seats outside, Timber Pizza can accommodate diners, but do not expect anything other that a few spots to sit down since pizza boxes have priority seating. That being said, the pizza does smell good, so brownie points for the good odors.
The Worthy
SERVICE
4.5/10
Average; pretty much right down the middle. Timber Pizza’s staff are nice and will get your order out to you as soon as your pizza is freshly made — which actually doesn’t take too long. The only downside is that, once again, this place operates more like a food delivery ghost kitchen, so the operations are built to meet that model. In the end, in-person clientele enjoying a comforting meal is not the priority; cooking up endless pizzas to feed the District is.
The Shirley
FOOD
6.5/10
Solid pizzas with distinct flavors.
Armed with some tasty and unique selections, Timber Pizza produces a decent personal sized pizza that you’ll appreciate whether you want to eat it all yourself or share amongst a larger group.
Given the thicker crust, the pizza slices are easy to pick up and eat without toppings falling over as you try to take your bite. That being said, we do think the crust can be a bit too much and leave us eating loads of chewy carbs. Yet, on the greasiness scale, Timber Pizza is relatively clean.
Some of the popular selections are The Worthy, The Shirley, and The Pretty in Pepperoni.
For The Worthy, the strawberry toppings are very juicy and flavorful, but too overwhelming, crowding out the other flavors. It probably doesn’t help that we barely noticed the BBQ sauce and base, which is a let down given the chicken and barbecue theme. Perhaps if the rest of the pizza was enhanced, the strawberry additions would simply add some sweetness, rather than take over.
When it comes to The Shirley, the pepperoni shine through and the jalapeño kick really turns things up a notch. Out of the more famous selections, we’d spotlight this pie as one of Timber Pizza’s best.
Lastly, The Pretty in Pepperoni is pretty standard and toes the line for an average pepperoni pizza with perhaps a slight deduction in points for the oddly placed basil… seems like operations are going a little too fast.
