The Ratings

Our simple & honest checklist covers a restaurant’s key ingredients:
Ambiance, Service, and Food.

AMBIANCE

4.5/10

A one, a two
a one two, three, four! Are you out and about at 10PM on a Friday or Saturday night and happen to be on the Wharf looking for an easygoing spot? Well you’re in luck then because Kirwan’s has you covered with local musicians. If you’re coming at any other time, do not fret. While there may not be a guitarist or singer to amplify the vibes, Kirwan’s is still a relaxed spot to hang out at. With both plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, Kirwan’s has you covered for all times of the day or year. The irish pub is uncomplicated and straightforward. Come as you are and leave as you please.

SERVICE

4.5/10

Friendly! While the service at Kirwan’s is simple, it’s what you’d expect from an irish pub that fills its tables with groups of tourists and rowdy friends coming to visit and hang out on the Wharf. The waitstaff are amicable and will accompany you to your table as if you’ve been friends for months. You’ll be seated and asked how they can fill your bellies with grub and beer. Once your food and drinks are served and you’re munching away, your waitstaff bros will leave you to it. But, they will eventually wander their way back to you to ask if you need any top offs. You get the picture? Very laid-back and chill.

Chorizo Omelet

FOOD

4/10

Look, we get it. If you checked out Kirwan’s website or social media pictures, you’d think this irish pub is serving up gourmet meals. However, we really do not expect the vast majority of Kirwan’s clientele to have done research prior to coming to this joint
it’s just not that type of place. Kirwan’s is a ‘you’re on the Wharf; you’re hungry for a casual meal and/or you want some beer’ type of venue. You walk on by, see that almost every other Wharf restaurant is going to be pricier and fancier, but you also do not want to get fast-food/takeout from the cheaper options, and you want simple food that you can’t mess up.

Whether you’re coming for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, Kirwan’s could be that pit-stop you’re looking for to refuel and relax. The Mixed Berry Waffle, which is a super, super, simple Belgian waffle topped with whipped cream, strawberries, and blueberries, is a fine option if you’re out and about and are having a lazy morning (because the dish costs $17 and unless you’re buying Japanese imported strawberries, you’ll be able to make a much more cost effective version at home). However, to be fair, the waffle was unexpectedly good for a simple waffle. Also, do get a cup of joe refillable coffee if it’s one of those mornings where you need the caffeine boost.

On the other hand, the Chorizo Omelet filled with onions and red peppers and served with a potatoe cake, is another option to fill you up. Again, you can’t go wrong and nobody in your group will be upset with the simple and fine tasting options.

If you’re coming for lunch or dinner, the Lamb Stew is a good way to warm you up, especially on a colder or winter evening. The stew consists of braised lamb, carrots, onions, celery, potato, and, of course, the whole is bathed in a Guinness broth.

Kirwan’s isn’t meant to be fancy. It’s comfort food that won’t upset anyone in your party, and is for times when you aren’t trying to impress or go all out. With that being said, the food itself scores slightly below average due to it’s simplistic nature. I mean, like we said, we’re not making reservations here. But if you’re in the neighborhood and fit our aforementioned clientele description, by all means, Kirwan’s is your pit stop or casual hangout.
