The Ratings

Our simple & honest checklist covers a restaurant’s key ingredients:
Ambiance, Service, and Food.

AMBIANCE

6/10

Bistro Du Jour has two locations in the District: one in Capitol Hill and another (better) option on the Wharf — because to be fair, who doesn’t prefer being on the waterfront (and in the center of most Wharf-based activities and festivities)? As a bonus, the restaurant has an outdoor patio that is opened to the fresh river air during the warmer months, and closed off with really warm heaters during the winter.

During all times of the year, Bistro Du Jour is a convenient place for a clean, predictable, and uncomplicated French meal. Enjoy a quick meal with friends before catching a concert at The Anthem across the street or stay for as long as you want and sip on some lattes.

SERVICE

6/10

Friendly! The Bistro Du Jour team feels like a big family and is quite accommodating. The hosts and waitstaff are always nice and upbeat. If you didn’t make a reservation, you can easily get on the waitlist at the front desk and they will make sure to get you in even sooner than predicted.

FOOD

6/10

Bistro Du Jour has a good selection of yummy breakfast, lunch, and some dinner items. The food is consistent, satisfying, and the prices are decent for a DC eatery. Nonetheless, while the food is tasty, you shouldn’t expect anything to absolutely blow you away. Remember: come here for a stress-free easy meal.

If you’re coming for breakfast or brunch, we recommend the Omelette De Blanc D’Oeufs, which is a clean, straightforward, and healthy dish. The egg white omelet only has two main ingredients: zucchini and goat cheese, topped with some thyme. The omelet is served with crispy fingerling potatoes which makes for a nice crunchy bite alongside the softer and more delicate cheesy omelet. Another great breakfast option is the Pain Perdu, a delicious brioche french toast served with a blueberry compote and chantilly cream. If you’re looking to accompany your morning meal with some pastries, please be advised that this restaurant’s baked goods are just OK. Don’t get us wrong, they are still good, but due to their extreme flakiness (i.e. the Classic Croissants will fall apart when biting into them), we think other French cafĂ©s and bistros do it better.

A few other breakfast and brunch items to consider are the Quiche Du Jour and the Oeufs Au Plat, which is a slice of griddled sourdough topped with sunny-side up eggs, sautéed mushrooms, and covered with a cheesy mornay sauce.

For lunch or dinner, do consider starting with the Soupe à L’Oignon, which checks the box on consistency and texture (and is a nice soup for a winter day), but lacks a bit on distinctive flavors. For the rest of your meal, the Filet De Saumon Rîti accompanied by a small portion of ratatouille and a light salad, the Steak Frites paired with french fries and a light salad, and the Coq Au Vin served with bacon lardons, mushrooms, onions, carrots, and a scoop of mashed potatoes are all fine options.
