The Ratings

Our simple & honest checklist covers a restaurant’s key ingredients:
Ambiance, Service, and Food.

AMBIANCE

6.5/10

Brasserie Beck is located in Mt Vernon Square and has been serving up decent Belgian food in a nice and casual setting since 2007. The restaurant is decorated in a European brasserie-styled fashion with blue accents, woven chairs, and equally spaced-out train-station clocks with different timezones from across the world. While other brasseries’ layouts give a more communal-like feeling by having one larger space, Brasserie Beck’s layout is rectangular and setup in smaller clusters of tables. While some prefer the separation — which offers a bit more privacy and doesn’t feel as loud — the result is a slight feeling of disconnectedness. This is a bit of shame because the open kitchen concept in the middle of the restaurant would otherwise be a pleasant sight to see. Instead, the open kitchen is simply a staging area for the waitstaff or a sight for diners who take a second to pause as they transit through the restaurant.

SERVICE

5/10

Fine. Our food was brought out relatively quickly, our waters were always filled up, and our waitstaff were attentive — perhaps a little too much. We could have done without as many “check-ins” from so many different people over the course of the meal. Moreover, when we asked our waiter for the chef’s specialities, we were pretty much met with a response that included half the menu — not the most insightful of remarks.

Braised Rabbit

FOOD

6.5/10

A pleasant and decent meal. Brasserie Beck’s cuisine is consistent, tasty, and a bit pricey. The menu is filled with traditional hearty foods and nobody in your party should feel left out. With options from a seafood tower, to duck breast, and spaghetti bolognese, to an American cheese burger, Brasserie Beck covers all the bases. If you elect to dine before 7PM any day of the week, the restaurant offers a fairly priced 3 course $48 prix fixe menu. However, the à la carte selections are more varied (and consequently more expensive). As a good starter, we recommend the Pan Seared Maine Scallops, which were served on top of a celeriac purée and a fricassee of mushrooms. For your entrées, the Braised Rabbit is a popular item. Mixed with a wild mushroom and mustard sauce (and topped with some sour cream), the pappardelle dish is filling and satisfying. Another popular item is the more standard Entrecote Frites — a New York strip steak with both a red wine and a béarnaise sauce. Once again, a tasty and satisfying option. Overall, Brasserie Beck leaves you content, but do not expect it to blow you away or push the boundaries of deliciousness.
